The Blynman School was built in 1892. It is a 2-room, wooden schoolhouse which taught grades 1 – 9. It closed in 1948 and was used by the village as a community center until it was reopened as a schoolhouse in the 1960’s.  Magnolia's 1st and 2nd grades attended the schoolhouse for years until the late 1970's.  This building is one of a small handful of Victorian-era schoolhouses left in this country and is the ideal home for Magnolia's history to be preserved and shared!

Since the Magnolia Historical Society's founding over four decades ago, our collection and activities have grown beyond our founders' wildest imagination! We have nearly 300 members and supporters - all dedicated to preserving Magnolia's glorious history and investing in its future. With funds raised through these memberships and donations, we are able to offer lectures, property/deed research, digital archiving and the ongoing restoration of the Blynman Schoolhouse, which serves as a museum for our archives and artifacts.

We are also the caretakers of Magnolia Point Cemetery, which is across the street.  We maintain the grounds and have been restoring and resetting the headstones as necessary. We recently expanded the usable area and built a cremation section which has lots available for purchase for the current generation of Magnolia residents.

The Magnolia Historical Society & Museum is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission to collect, preserve, share and teach the beautiful, almost 400 years of Magnolia History, from its original name of Kettle Cove to its common name of Magnolia.

The Magnolia Historical Society was founded in 1982 by Mrs. Frances M. Hines, Mr. James Cook & Mr. Lester Strangman. These folks combined their private collections of Magnolia artifacts and archives and envisioned creating a Society. A meeting was held, a Board of Directors was formed with Mr. James Cook as the 1st President & Mrs. Frances Hines as the 1st Curator.  The Magnolia Library Center let us use a room in their building and the vision became a reality! As the collection grew, the society realized the need for a larger space. In 2013 we were able to purchase the Rev. Richard Blynman School at 46 Magnolia Ave. from the City of Gloucester to house our museum and cultural center.
